Strait of Hormuz: Iran Proposes New Toll Scheme
Iran is in discussions with Oman to establish a permanent toll system for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran's Ambassador to France, Mohammad Amin-Nejad. This system would require ships to pay a fee to cover navigation management and security.
Amin-Nejad emphasized that Iran currently does not have a payment or toll system. The Strait of Hormuz is within Iran's territorial waters, and Iran, with the longest coastline on the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, bears responsibility for regional security. The fees imposed are expected to be clear, transparent, reasonable, and logical, and in line with Iran's international commitments.
The ambassador also stated that maritime traffic has decreased due to recent military action and high insurance costs, although the flow of ships has not completely stopped. Oman has not yet commented on this proposal.
Variables to monitor include the implementation of the toll system, Oman's response, the impact on global shipping costs, and the stability of the Strait of Hormuz. (arl)
