Trump Threatens Oman; Risk of Escalating Hormuz Tensions

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated again after US President Donald Trump threatened military action against Oman should the country be deemed to be obstructing Washington's efforts in the Strait of Hormuz. This statement comes as Oman is engaged in talks with Iran regarding shipping arrangements in the strategic strait.

Oman has long acted as a mediator and is currently discussing a new navigation scheme with Tehran. Iran previously stated that the talks had reached an advanced stage, though an agreement would not automatically guarantee the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Washington is not a party to the Iran-Oman negotiations and continues to insist on freedom of navigation through the waterway.

The situation has become increasingly complex following the expiration of a temporary US-Iran agreement without a permanent resolution. Trump refused to extend the deal, while Iran has signaled it would adopt a more offensive military stance should diplomacy fail. Tanker activity in the Strait of Hormuz also remains severely limited following a series of attacks on vessels.

This impasse has heightened the risk of energy supply disruptions. Brent crude prices have risen above US$90 per barrel as the market factors in the possibility of a prolonged conflict. Simultaneously, the US is preparing fresh economic pressure on Iran; consequently, the rivalry between Washington and Tehran is now playing out through a combination of blockades, sanctions, and military threats.

Impact Newsmaker: Should tensions involving the US, Iran, and Oman escalate further and the flow of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz face renewed disruption, oil prices could receive a bullish boost due to rising supply risk premiums. Gold prices could also strengthen driven by safe-haven demand. Meanwhile, the US dollar may face conflicting sentiments: rising due to safe-haven demand, yet experiencing increased volatility as oil price hikes fuel inflation and economic concerns. Conversely, if Iran-Oman diplomatic efforts result in the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, pressure on oil prices could ease, potentially dampening safe-haven demand for gold. (asd)*
