Australian Unemployment Rises to 4.5%; Aussie Under Pressure

Australia's unemployment rate rose to 4.5% in July 2026 from 4.4% in June, exceeding market expectations that the figure would remain at 4.4%. Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicates that labor market conditions are beginning to lose momentum after previously showing strength.

Pressure is also evident in employment figures. Australia lost approximately 15,800 jobs in July—a sharp reversal from the 76,300 gain in June and well below market expectations of an increase of around 15,000 jobs.

The labor force participation rate dipped slightly to 66.9% from 67.0%. While full-time employment increased by approximately 16,300, the number of part-time jobs fell by 32,200, following a period of strong growth.

The data signals a cooling Australian labor market, which could alleviate pressure on the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to raise interest rates again in the near term. However, the RBA's policy direction will continue to depend on inflation trends, particularly amidst the risk of rising global energy prices.

The Australian dollar came under immediate pressure following the data release. The AUD/USD pair fell approximately 0.26% to the 0.7106 level as investors scaled back expectations for a more hawkish monetary policy from the RBA.

Newsmaker Analysis: The weakening labor data acts as a short-term negative sentiment for the Aussie, as it reduces the rationale for further RBA tightening. If subsequent economic data also shows a slowdown, the AUD/USD pair could face further downward pressure. Nevertheless, inflation and US dollar movements remain critical factors that will determine whether the Aussie's weakness persists or remains limited. (asd)*
