Wall Street Ends Flat Amid Fed Uncertainty
Stocks in the US closed mostly flat on Friday as investors digested a mix of geopolitical developments, Federal Reserve uncertainty, and the start of the fourth-quarter earnings season. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were mostly flat, while the Dow fell 80 points.
President Donald Trump signaled he may keep economic adviser Kevin Hassett in his current role rather than appoint him as the next Fed chair, boosting expectations that former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh could emerge as the frontrunner.
Chip stocks provided some support, as Taiwan Semiconductor, Nvidia, Micron, and other semiconductor companies rose on strong earnings, AI-driven optimism, and a US–Taiwan trade deal promising $250 billion in investment in American production. Conversely, financials lagged despite solid earnings, weighed down by worries over a proposed cap on credit card interest rates. For the week, the S&P 500 fell 0.1%, the Nasdaq dropped 0.4%, and the Dow finished flat.
