US Stocks Start the Week Strong
US stocks started the week strong as the S&P 500 rose 1.6% the Nasdaq gained 2.4% and the Dow added about 415 points after the Senate advanced a procedural measure that moves a funding bill to reopen the government and end the 40-day shutdown a step closer to passage.
Eight Democrats broke with leadership to support the motion but the bill still needs a House vote. Technology names tied to artificial intelligence led the rally with Nvidia (5.8%), Palantir (8.8%), AMD (4.5%), and Micron (6.5%) among the biggest gainers as investors shifted back into high-growth positions.
Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Governor Stephen Miran said a half point cut in December would be appropriate, increasing the odds of easier policy and potentially underpinning risk assets if the stance gains broader Fed support. Yet the shutdown remains an overhang because it has delayed key economic releases and leaves execution risk in the House that could unsettle markets if the agreement unravels.
