Bessent: US-China Trade Talks Going "Very Well," Xi Summit Schedule Remains Fluid
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said trade talks with China were going "very well" on Monday, assessing that relations between the two countries remain stable. He said discussions included a draft new tariff regime, but emphasized that Washington is not seeking economic decoupling with Beijing, but rather strategic changes.
Regarding the possibility of a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Bessent said the schedule remains uncertain. He emphasized that any delay would not be due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, but rather logistical factors—including Trump's option to remain in the US amid the Iran war.
Bessent also urged market participants not to interpret the potential rescheduling as a sign of worsening US-China relations. He stated that the rescheduling—if it occurs—does not reflect a new conflict between Washington and Beijing, but rather an operational decision amidst the ongoing geopolitical situation.
