Trump Urges Iran to “Unconditional Surrender,” Negotiations Closed
US President Donald Trump said he does not want to negotiate an end to the war with Iran and is demanding Tehran’s unconditional surrender, amid continued US and Israeli airstrikes. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote there would be no deal “except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER,” and stated that the US and its allies would choose “GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s)” for Iran.
The statement comes as the US-Israel war against Iran continues to mount casualties. Reports indicate at least 1,332 people have been killed in Iran so far, with dozens more killed in retaliatory strikes in regional countries. Six US soldiers were reportedly killed, all in the first two days of the conflict.
Iran is now preparing to elect a successor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28, the first day of the conflict. Mojtaba Khamenei, the late Khamenei’s second-eldest son, is said to be in the running. Trump called Mojtaba “lightweight” and emphasized his desire to be directly involved in selecting the next leader, while pushing for changes to Iran’s leadership structure.
In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, Trump also implied a broader goal than just a ceasefire agreement. He said he wanted Iran's leadership structure "cleaned up" and rejected any scenario that would allow the regime to rebuild its capacity over the long term, reinforcing the perception that the war's ultimate goal is still in flux and potentially prolonging geopolitical uncertainty.
