Chinese AI Is Almost on Par with the US!

China's artificial intelligence (AI) models are only a few months behind Western AI models, said Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, in a CNBC podcast. This statement indicates that China's AI technological capabilities are now closer to those of the US than they were a year or two ago.

Hassabis, who leads Google's AI development, including Gemini Assistant and other AI models, said that while China is rapidly catching up, its developers have not yet made major breakthroughs that truly surpass leading Western models. He questioned whether Chinese AI innovation could surpass America's anytime soon.

Over the past year, Chinese AI companies like DeepSeek and other "AI tigers" have released several advanced AI models that approach the capabilities of their US counterparts in key AI benchmarks. This shows that China is no longer a minor player, but a serious entrant in the global AI race.

Furthermore, Chinese tech giants like Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent are also ramping up their AI efforts. This push aligns with Beijing's strategy to achieve full self-reliance in the AI sector, including developing domestically produced AI chips to eliminate dependence on foreign technology.

Despite progress, Chinese-made AI chips still lag behind advanced offerings from Nvidia and other Western manufacturers. This poses a significant challenge for China, as AI chips are the backbone of the performance of the latest generation of AI models. Analysts believe that the global AI competition is now entering a new phase of intense competition between the US and China. (az)
